Who are Peter Navarro and Daniel Scavino?
The U.S. House Select Committee will recommend the House of Representatives cite Peter Navarro and Daniel Scavino for criminal contempt of Congress and refer them for prosecution.
The U.S. House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack announced that on Monday the committee will vote on a “report recommending that the House of Representatives cite Peter Navarro and Daniel Scavino, Jr. for criminal contempt of Congress and refer them for prosecution.”
The 34-page report states that Navarro and Scavino “shall be found to be in contempt of Congress for failure to comply with congressional subpoenas,” and details their attempts to obstruct the Committee’s investigation into their involvement in the events leading to the January 6th Insurrection.
Peter Navarro
Navarro allegedly has information directly relevant to the Committee’s investigation, and that he “hasn’t been shy about his role in efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election and has even discussed the former President’s support for those plans,” according to a statement by U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS), Chairman of the U.S. House Select Committee.
Navarro “worked with Steve Bannon and others to develop and implement a plan to delay Congress's certification” and overturn the results of the 2020 election, and publicly stated that the former President was "on board with the strategy" as well as "more than 100" members of Congress, according to the Committee’s subpoena letter.
Navarro said in a statement that his “position remains this is not my executive privilege to waive and the committee should negotiate this matter with President Trump. If he waives the privilege, I will be happy to comply.”
In 2016, Trump appointed Navarro to serve as the Assistant to the President and Director of Trade and Industrial Policy. Navarro participated in a call with Georgia election officials in which the former President pressured them to overturn the results of the election, and stated that he coordinated a plan with “over 100 congressmen, including some senators” to object to the results of the 2020 election.
Daniel Scavino
Scavino was “with the former President on January 5th during a discussion of how to convince Members of Congress not to certify the election for Joe Biden. Prior to the January 6th March for Trump, Mr. Scavino promoted the event on Twitter, encouraging people to ‘be a part of history,’” according to a statement by the Select Committee.
Scavino was “with or in the vicinity of former President Trump on January 6 and are a witness regarding his activities that day,” and “may also have materials relevant to his videotaping and tweeting messages on January 6. Accordingly, the Select Committee seeks both documents and your deposition testimony regarding these and other matters that are within the scope of the Select Committee's inquiry,” according to the Committee’s subpoena letter.
During the 2016 campaign, Scavino was appointed by Trump to “direct the rapidly growing social media operation for his presidential campaign, putting him at the tip of the spear of Trump's unwieldy—and controversial--communication strategy,” and was then appointed by the former President as White House Director of Social Media.
Scavino reportedly spoke to the former President “more than just about anybody else aside from Trump’s own family members, ping-ponging in and out of the Oval, sometimes more than a half-dozen times a day,” and would be the longest-serving aide in the Trump Administration.
